Question by MJ: What’s the best order to study Adobe programming?
Does anyone know the best order to study: 1) ColdFusion, 2) AIR, 3) Flex, and 4) ActionScript? Also, does anyone know what these are used for in comparison to each other? Is there any overlap that makes one unnecessary? Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by knitting guy
They are used for different things. I wouldn’t say that they overlap each other but they can work with each other.
1) ColdFusion is used for create dynamic web applications.

2) AIR stands for Adobe Integrated Run-time allows you to create desktop applications by using HTML, Javascript, or Flash.

3) Flex allows you to create RIA (Rich Internet Applications) using Flash but you don’t need to know Flash. In a sense, it is Adobe’s way for developers to get involved with Flash Flex is open source; so, you can download the SDK for free. However, you do need to pay for the Flex Builder though. Flex Builder has two editions, one with the charting and one without. Flex Builder is built using Eclipse.

4) ActionScript is an Object Oriented language that integrates with Flash. You can use ActionScript to program your Flash movies.

You can use ColdFusion to create web services. And then your Flex app can call these web services to create dynamic contents. You can use ActionScript within Flex builder. You can use Flex builder to create AIR apps.

ColdFusion is used for creating dynamic web applications. It is a bit different than the rest. If you are interested in creating dynamic web applications, sure, go ahead and learn it. If not, you can just go ahead to learn Flex and ActionScript. To turn an application into an AIR app is like the switch of a button; basically, you just compile things differently. So, there is not much to learn in AIR, per se.

Question by marquell1: What is the difference between Adobe Flex and Adobe Air?
I am looking at developing applications for cell phones, web, and desktops? I like adobe products and thats what I want to use for my platform.

Thank you,

Best answer:

Answer by Steven V
There are 3 platforms that Flex can run in. Flash, Flash Lite, and Air.

Flash is for the browser. Flash Lite is for the phone. and AIR is for the desktop.

Flex can be used to create any of these applications. However, Flash lite doesn’t allow the use of ActionScript which is essential for creating complex apps.

The difference is also the libraries that you have access to. AIR provides additional libraries so that you can talk to the OS and get things like file listings.

Question by faacadem: Is there a Flex Builder for Dreamweaver?
Flex Builder 3 was released as a Eclipse based development tool. I was curious is there is a Dreamweaver version out there or if Adobe plans to make one in the future. Seems kinda odd they built FlexBuilder for Eclipse instead of for their own product Dreamweaver….

Best answer:

Answer by Tejas S
One of the reasons is that Flex is targeted at Java developers for widespread acceptance. I would have preferred a Dreamweaver version since Dreamweaver is simple but I am not complaining. Flex Builder also is reasonably good with fairly good intellisense and other features.

I am a total begginer and i want to start programming, im looking for the easiest and funnest language. To create windows apps and iphone apps, not very complicated stuff. I know about adobe air/flex which seem to be good and designing in windows but the dont look so popular or good. And if you say java, may you please specify which IDE i should use eclipse or netbeans. I can buy visual basic, money isnt a problem.

Best answer:

Answer by Meh
VB is the easiest. You can mkae windows programs with a nice GUI very easily. However you wont be able to make iPhone apps.

I believe iPhone apps are written in c++ although you can also use flash (action script) and then convert flash into iPhone apps i believe.

Denver, CO (PRWEB) March 26, 2009

360|Conferences, the organizers of 360|Flex, today announced a more simplified pricing plan for event sponsors. Embracing the organization’s history of revolutionizing technical conferences, event organizers have introduced “build it yourself” pricing to allow sponsors more flexible funding options.

Organizations or individuals interested in sponsoring 360|Flex can now do so for only a $ 1,000 base sponsorship, which includes a free admission ticket. Additionally, sponsors have more than 15 “a la carte” items to choose from to tailor their sponsorship to better meet their needs.

“We realized that sponsorships are currently one size fits all,” said Tom Ortega, co-founder of 360IConferences. “There’s levels, but if your needs don’t match a level, you’re usually out of luck. Our goal is to give every company that wants to sponsor our events the ability to have a sponsorship suited to their specific needs.”

In adopting an “a la carte” model, 360|Conferences intends to make conference sponsorships more of a mutually beneficial arrangement between organizers and sponsors. By taking the various components of a typical sponsorship level and converting each piece to an a la carte option, event supporters can create a sponsorship that is perfectly suited to their needs, without any additional options they don’t need or want included.

One of the founding principles of 360|Conferences is to change the way conferences are facilitated, making them more affordable for developers to attend, and now, making them more affordable for businesses to sponsor.

“We want to make sure that any company or individual that wants to work with us can, and can do so with a sponsorship that fits their needs” said John Wilker, co-founder of 360|Conferences.

For additional information on the news that is the subject of this release (or for a sample, copy or demo), contact John Wilker or visit 360|Flex.

About 360|Conferences:

Founded in 2007 to offer community focused software developer conferences, 360|Conferences currently offers 360|Flex, for developers that build with the Adobe Flex and Flash Platform product line, and 360|iDev, for developers that build with the Apple iPhone SDK.
